Why is Dental Care important?

Good oral health is about more than just your teeth - it’s an essential part of your overall well-being. Research shows that gum disease is linked to systemic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and other inflammatory illnesses. Taking care of your mouth helps support your body’s overall health and longevity.

Our Approach to Whole-Health Dentistry

At Yorkview Dental, we take a comprehensive, patient-centred approach to dental care. This means going beyond routine checkups and cleanings to focus on prevention, education, nutrition, and hygiene - the foundations of lifelong oral health.

When you join our practice, we typically recommend a Comprehensive Oral Exam (COE) as your first step. This detailed assessment allows us to understand your dental history, identify potential concerns early, and create a personalized plan to maintain and protect your smile.

Personalized, Empathetic Care

Our dentists and hygienists take the time to listen - understanding your goals, concerns, and comfort preferences before developing any treatment plan. Each patient receives care tailored to their unique needs, lifestyle, and health priorities.

We believe that empowered patients make confident, informed decisions about their care. That’s why education and open communication are at the heart of every visit at Yorkview Dental.

I'm a new patient - what should I expect on my first visit?

Welcome to Yorkview Dental!

We’re so glad you’ve chosen to join our dental family. From the moment you arrive, our friendly front desk team will help you get settled, confirm your medical history, and answer any questions you may have.

Our goal is to make your first visit comfortable, informative, and stress-free - ensuring you feel confident and cared for every step of the way.

What to Bring

To help us serve you better, please bring:

  • A piece of valid photo ID

  • Your dental insurance information (if applicable)

  • Secondary insurance details, if you have more than one plan

What Happens at Your First Appointment

For new patients, we typically recommend a Comprehensive Oral Exam (COE) and diagnostic X-rays

This one-hour visit allows your dentist to:

  • Assess the health of your teeth, gums, jaw, and soft tissues

  • Identify any early signs of dental or periodontal concerns

  • Establish a personalized care plan based on your individual needs

After your exam, your dentist will review any findings with you and discuss treatment options or preventive care recommendations. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions and fully understand each step before moving forward.

Your next Steps

Following your exam, our front desk team can help you schedule your next hygiene visit or any recommended treatments. We believe in clear communication and collaborative care - so your comfort, understanding, and confidence remain our top priorities.

If you’d like to learn more about what a Comprehensive Oral Exam includes, you can read more here

What if I already had a comprehensive exam done recently at my previous practice?

If you’re new to Yorkview Dental, welcome! Since we haven’t seen you before and don’t yet have a record of your dental history, your first visit will typically include a Comprehensive Oral Exam (COE). This allows our team to assess your oral health and determine if any treatment or preventive care is needed. We take great pride in the way we perform our Comprehensive Oral Exams. These detailed assessments help us establish an accurate and standardized record of your oral health - especially valuable if it’s been more than six months since your last checkup.

If you have dental insurance, we recommend confirming with your provider whether a new patient or comprehensive exam is covered before your appointment. Our front desk team is always happy to assist with any questions about scheduling or coverage.

What if I only need to look at a specific tooth?

If you’re experiencing a specific concern - such as a sore spot, chipped or broken tooth, or localized pain - you can book a specific examination with one of our dentists.

This type of exam focuses only on the area or tooth that’s causing concern. Depending on your symptoms, your dentist may recommend taking an X-ray to assess the tooth’s structure and supporting tissues below the gum line, allowing for an accurate diagnosis and treatment recommendation.

Does my new patient exam include a cleaning?

Not necessarily! A new patient exam is a one-hour comprehensive check-up which includes a thorough assessment of the health of your teeth, gums, and jawline, and includes oral x-rays. Unless you've specifically booked a back-to-back, 2-hour appointment for both a new patient exam and a cleaning, your exam will not include a hygiene visit.

We want to ensure your appointment meets your expectations, so if you’re unsure what your visit will include, please don’t hesitate to ask when booking, we’re happy to clarify everything in advance.

Can I bring my x-rays taken at my previous dental clinic?

Yes, you’re welcome to have your previous dental X-rays sent to Yorkview Dental before your first appointment.

Please note that X-rays older than nine months may no longer show the most accurate picture of your current oral health, as changes in teeth and bone structure can occur over time.

To ensure the most precise and up-to-date diagnosis, your dentist may recommend taking new X-rays during your visit.

How do dental cleanings work?

A standard dental cleaning at Yorkview Dental typically takes about one hour and includes:

  • Scaling to remove plaque and tartar buildup

  • Polishing to smooth the tooth surfaces

  • Fluoride treatment to help strengthen enamel and protect against decay

If it has been some time since your last cleaning or you don’t visit the dentist regularly, your hygienist may recommend multiple visits to safely and thoroughly remove buildup and restore your teeth to optimal health.

What is included in my appointment?

For returning patients, a cleaning may also include a routine check-up or X-rays, depending on your ongoing care schedule.

If you’re a new patient, your cleaning appointment will include hygiene services only -  unless you’ve specifically scheduled a two-hour, back-to-back appointment that combines both a comprehensive dental exam and a cleaning.

If you’re unsure which appointment type you’ve booked, our front desk team is always happy to confirm the details before your visit.

I have dental insurance - can you bill my insurance company directly?

At Yorkview Dental, we’re proud to offer direct billing for your convenience. Just let our front desk team know before your appointment, and we’ll submit your claim directly to your insurance provider. You’ll only need to pay the portion not covered by your plan at the end of your visit - no extra paperwork, no hassle.

How It Works

If you have Canadian dental coverage, please share your insurance details with our team prior to your appointment.

  • If your plan allows assignment of benefits, we can bill your provider directly and you’ll simply pay any remaining balance.

  • If your plan does not allow assignment of benefits, payment will be required at the time of your visit. We’ll still assist you in submitting your claim so that you can be reimbursed directly by your insurer.

A Helpful Tip

To avoid any surprises, we recommend reviewing your dental coverage before your visit or contacting your insurance provider for details on your plan’s limits, frequencies, and coverage amounts.

What Is Secondary Dental Insurance?

Secondary dental insurance is an additional plan that may help cover treatment costs not paid by your primary insurance

For example, if your primary plan covers 80% of a procedure, your secondary plan may cover part or all of the remaining balance - depending on the details of your policy.

You may have secondary coverage through a spouse, parent, or a second plan under your own name.

How to Use Your Secondary Insurance

If you have a secondary dental plan, please let our reception team know before your appointment so we can process both claims correctly.

To bill your secondary plan, we’ll need the following information:

  • Insurance carrier name

  • Group or plan number

  • ID or subscriber number

  • Full name and date of birth of the secondary policyholder

For specific questions about your coverage or coordination of benefits, we recommend contacting your insurance provider directly.

Do you offer direct billing to my health spending account or travel insurance?

We’re unable to direct bill to health spending accounts, travel insurance, or insurance providers based outside of Canada.

For these types of plans, we ask that you pay in full on the day of your treatment. We’ll provide you with a detailed receipt so you can submit it to your insurer for reimbursement.

Do you have specialists in the office?

While Yorkview Dental does not have specialists on-site, we’re proud to be part of the View Dental network, which includes sister locations with in-house specialist providers such as periodontists and prosthodontists.

If your dentist determines that you would benefit from specialized care, we’ll coordinate a referral to our affiliated specialist clinic within the network. This allows for seamless communication between your dentist and specialist - ensuring your treatment is well-coordinated, personalized, and convenient.

By keeping your care within the View Dental family, your records stay connected, making it easier for our team to collaborate and support your ongoing oral health

How do your prices compare with other dental clinics in the GTA?

At Yorkview Dental, we follow the current Ontario Dental Association (ODA) fee guide, ensuring our pricing is fair, transparent, and consistent with provincial standards. Our goal is to make high-quality dental care both accessible and reliable for every patient.

Direct Billing for Your Convenience

We’re happy to offer direct billing to most dental insurance plans.
Simply provide your insurance details before your appointment, and our team will handle the submission process for you. You’ll only need to cover any remaining balance not included in your plan - no additional paperwork required.

Understanding Your Care and Costs

We encourage all patients to ask questions about their treatment options and associated fees. Our team is happy to review the details of your care plan and help you make confident, informed decisions.

While cost is one consideration, your oral health is a long-term investment. Our dentists combine clinical expertise, sound judgment, and advanced technology to provide safe, effective, and personalized care.

If you’d like to learn more about your coverage or discuss treatment options, we invite you to contact our office - we’re always here to help.

What is your cancellation policy?

At Yorkview Dental, we understand that life happens, and sometimes schedules change. We’ll always do our best to be flexible and accommodate your needs.

Because appointment times are reserved specifically for you, we kindly ask that you provide at least two (2) business days’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule.

Providing notice allows us to offer the time to another patient who may be waiting for care.

Please note that missed appointments or late cancellations without sufficient notice may be subject to a $50 fee.

We truly appreciate your understanding and cooperation, it helps us continue to provide timely, high-quality care to all of our patients.

Do you offer any discounts?

Yes! We’re pleased to offer a special discount for patients aged 65 and over.

If you have any questions about eligibility or how the discount is applied, feel free to ask our front desk team. We’re happy to help.

How can I pay?

We accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Debit, and cash for all in-office payments.

If you’re settling an outstanding balance, you’re welcome to visit the office in person or pay over the phone. Please note that phone payments must be made by credit card only.

If you have any questions about your balance or payment options, our front desk team will be happy to assist you.

Is teeth whitening covered by my insurance?

In most cases, teeth whitening is not covered by dental insurance plans because it is considered a cosmetic procedure. However, coverage details can vary between providers, so we recommend contacting your insurance company directly to confirm what your plan includes.

What Causes Tooth Discolouration?

Tooth discolouration typically falls into two main categories:

  • Extrinsic discolouration: Surface stains caused by external factors such as coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco, or certain foods and beverages.

  • Intrinsic discolouration: Internal staining that occurs within the tooth, often due to fluorosis, certain medications, dental trauma, or previous dental treatments.

Treatment Options

Some types of discolouration can be effectively improved with professional whitening treatments, while others may respond better to veneers, bonding, or restorative options.

If you’re concerned about tooth discolouration, book a consultation at Yorkview Dental. Our team will help determine the cause and discuss the most appropriate treatment options for your smile.

How often should I visit the dentist?

At Yorkview Dental, we recommend visiting your dentist at least twice a year for regular check-ups and cleanings. Depending on your individual oral health needs, your dentist or hygienist may suggest more frequent visits to keep your smile healthy and prevent potential problems before they start.

These routine appointments are essential for maintaining long-term oral health and supporting your overall well-being.

What’s Included in Your Visit

During your dental check-up, our team provides a thorough assessment that may include:

  • Medical history review: to stay informed about any changes in your overall health

  • Diagnostic X-rays: to detect issues such as decay, bone loss, or impacted teeth

  • Gum health evaluation: checking the condition of your gums and bone support

  • Cavity detection: identifying areas of decay using professional instruments

  • Review of existing restorations: assessing the condition of fillings, crowns, and bridges

  • Plaque and tartar removal: to help prevent gum disease and maintain oral hygiene

  • Oral cancer screening: examining your lips, tongue, cheeks, throat, and neck for early signs of concern

  • Teeth polishing: to remove surface stains and smooth tooth surfaces

  • Oral hygiene recommendations: personalized advice on tools, techniques, and home care

  • Dietary guidance: helping you make choices that promote better dental health

Your check-up is about more than cleaning your teeth – it plays a vital role in maintaining your overall health.

Do you treat children at your clinics?

Yes, we do! At Yorkview Dental, we love welcoming young patients and helping them build healthy dental habits from an early age. Our team provides gentle, preventive care for children starting around their first birthday or within six months of their first tooth appearing - whichever comes first.

We understand that a child’s first dental visits can shape how they feel about dentistry for years to come. That’s why our team focuses on creating a positive, relaxed, and fun experience for both kids and parents.

Why Start Early?

Early visits help:

  • Identify any developing dental issues early

  • Encourage good brushing and nutrition habits

  • Familiarize children with the dental environment

  • Support long-term oral health and comfort

Our exam rooms are designed with families in mind, and parents are welcome to stay with their child during the visit. Bringing a favourite toy or stuffed animal can also help little ones feel more at ease.

I'm pregnant - when should I visit the dentist and what should I know?

Congratulations! Pregnancy is an exciting time - and also a great opportunity to check in on your oral health. At Yorkview Dental, we recommend scheduling a dental visit early in your pregnancy, ideally during the second trimester, which is considered the safest time for routine dental care.

Why Dental Care Matters During Pregnancy

Hormonal changes can make gums more prone to inflammation and bleeding, a condition known as pregnancy gingivitis. You may also notice increased sensitivity or swelling.
If you experience any of these symptoms, don’t hesitate to contact us - our team can perform a gentle check-up, provide a thorough cleaning, and address any concerns you may have.

Safe and Personalized Care

Routine dental care and necessary treatments are safe during pregnancy. Your dentist will ensure that your cleaning and any recommended procedures are adjusted to meet your individual needs.

However, elective or cosmetic treatments (such as teeth whitening) are best postponed until after birth.
Be sure to let us know if you are pregnant or planning to conceive, so we can tailor your care accordingly.

What are your hours of operation?

Our clinics are open year-round to accommodate your schedule:

Monday to Friday: 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM
Saturday: 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM
We are closed on Sundays and public holidays.

Need an early morning, evening, or weekend appointment? We've got you covered!

Yes, we do! We are proud to participate in the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) to help make dental care more accessible to eligible patients.

Do you offer treatment for snoring or sleep apnea?

Yes, we do. If you’re concerned about snoring or possible sleep apnea, book an appointment with one of our Yorkview Dental dentists. We’ll begin by assessing your oral and airway health, reviewing your symptoms, and discussing how these issues may be affecting your sleep and overall well-being.

If necessary, we can coordinate a referral to a trusted sleep specialist for further evaluation and treatment. Our goal is to help ensure you receive the care you need for better rest and improved long-term health.

Your comfort, safety, and quality of sleep are important to us.
